  4. Icon Platform M+ Controller: Using a DAW Controller with Virtual Instruments

Comments Off on Icon Platform M+ Controller: Using a DAW Controller with Virtual Instruments

In our latest video tutorial, we look at using the Icon Platform M+ DAW Controller as an expression controller for virtual instruments inside a DAW.

Both compact and versatile, the Icon Platform M+ is the perfect DAW Controller for small studio and home setups and offers tactile control of a wide range of Digital Audio Workstations.

The Platform M+ uses MIDI data to send commands to each DAW, which means that it can also be used for a range of other applications, including as an expression controller for virtual instruments and other plugins within DAW projects. This makes the Platform M+ a versatile solution to those who would primarily use it for DAW-based work but also want to be able to use it for adding realism to instrument libraries in their projects.

In this video tutorial, we show you how you can use the Icon Platform M+ as an Expression Controller for use with virtual instruments in your DAW.

To add realism to virtual instruments, such as strings and other orchestral instruments, composers rely on the dynamic control built in to most VSTs. The most basic way of implementing this is through the use of a MIDI keyboard’s modulation wheel, though this doesn’t always offer the best range of motion.

This is where using a DAW Controller like the Icon Platform M+ comes in, offering fader-based control of various parameters inside your virtual instruments. You can watch the video tutorial below or keep reading for a step-by-step text guide.

Icon Platform M+ - Synthax Audio UKIcon Platform M+

Perfect for studio setups where space is at a premium, the Icon Platform M+ is a DAW Controller that packs a large amount of control into a relatively small footprint.

Designed to emulate a mixing console with one-click control to common functions like Mute and Solo, as well as faders for controlling volume and encoders for panning, the Icon Platform M+ also features control functionality for a range of Digital Audio Workstations.

When used as a DAW Controller, motorised faders allow you to keep an eye on the levels of each channel, with buttons available for switching between banks of channels. Each channel also features its own Mute, Solo and Record Arm buttons, making quickly recording takes smooth and simple.

Transport controls allow for quick access to frequently used functions like play, stop and record, whilst the jog wheel makes it easy to move anywhere along your project with a simple turn.

Its modular design means that you can start with a single Platform M+ and add up to three extra Platform X+ expander panels to create a 32 channel DAW Controller.

It is even possible to customise the controls of the Platform M+ to suit a variety of other applications including as a MIDI expression controller for virtual instruments, like in the video tutorial above.

We recently released a video that outlines some of the ways a DAW Controller like the Platform M+ can improve your setup, which you can check out here.

Using the Platform M+ as an Expression Controller – Step-by-Step Guide

1 – Download the Icon iMap Software here.

2 – Follow the installer for the software and then open.

Next, the Platform M+ has to be set to User Defined mode. This is achieved by following the below.

    1 – Turn on the Platform M+.

2 – As soon as you turn on the Platform M+, press the illuminated “Select” button above channel 7 until the red LED over channel 4 is lit. User Defined mode is now selected.

Now that the Platform M+ is in User Defined mode and the software has been installed, we can begin adjusting the control parameters of the Platform M+ to create our expression controller.

Icon Platform M+ iMap Software - Synthax Audio UKNote that if you’ve already been using the Platform M+ as a DAW Controller, it will need to be removed as a control surface in your DAW. This will stop any control data confusion between the controller and your DAW.

1 – Once iMap is open, click “Connect” and select Platform M+.

2 – When connected, change the Control Mode to “User Define”.

3 – Click Fader 1, and change “message type” to “CC” and Message to “1 – Modulation(GM)”.

4 – Click Fader 2, and change “message type” to “CC”, change Channel to 1 and Message to “11 – Expression(GM).

Under each fader icon is a mouse pointer which indicates the touch-sensitive control portion of the fader. This next step will remove this touch-sensitivity, which itself could accidentally sound a high-pitched note when using MIDI instruments.

1 – Click the pointer on fader one and change “Msg Type” to “Null”.

2 – Repeat Step 3 for all faders. Note that the Master fader cannot be changed.

3 – Click “Send Data”, which will load this layout onto the Platform M+.

It is important to click “Save File” when this has been done, as iMap resets all values when it is closed and opened again.

    Creative Control of Virtual Instruments

The CC1 control is commonplace in most VSTs as a dynamic control, whilst CC11 is frequently used in orchestral libraries as an “expression” control. Other libraries, like those from Spitfire Audio (as seen in the video tutorial) assign CC values to a wide range of other parameters.

This means you could use the Platform M+ to control settings like Attack or Decay For more experimental control, even things like Reverb can be assigned to faders on the Platform M+ in some cases. For a full list of the commands available in your VST libraries, check the MIDI Mapping section of the manual or search online.

You can check out the Spitfire Audio LABS range of instruments here.

Comments Off on Icon Platform M+: Using a DAW Controller with Adobe Lightroom Classic

In our latest video tutorial, we look at controlling Adobe’s Lightroom Classic photo editing software with the Icon Platform M+ DAW Controller.

The Icon Platform M+ is a compact and versatile USB control surface for recording, mixing and editing DAW projects. Designed to emulate a mixing console with one-click control to common functions like Mute and Solo, as well as faders for controlling volume and encoders for panning, the Icon Platform M+ also features control functionality for a range of Digital Audio Workstations.

The Platform M+ uses MIDI data to send commands to each DAW, which means that it can also be used for a range of other applications, including as an expression controller for virtual instruments and other plugins within DAW projects. What’s more, when combined with third-party apps, the Platform M+ can interact with other creative programs such as Adobe’s Lightroom Classic photo-editing software. This makes the Platform M+ a versatile solution to those who would primarily use it for DAW-based work but want the option to be able to use it for other tasks.

In our latest video tutorial, we show you how can control Adobe’s Lightroom Classic editing software with the Platform M+ for basic tone adjustments and transport control. The video covers everything from installation of the plugin all the way to showing you a fully-fledged template for MIDI2LR. Step by step instructions are also available below.

Icon Platform M+ - Synthax Audio UKIcon Platform M+

Offering a large amount of control across a device that takes up minimal desk space, the Icon Platform M+ is a DAW Controller designed to put all the control you could need, right where you need it.

DAW Controllers like the Platform M+ make it possible to put down the mouse and keyboard and work on your projects without distraction. This allows you to focus using your ears, rather than focusing on your next mouse click.

For its small size, the Platform M+ is packed with control functionality. Motorised faders allow you to keep an eye on the levels of each channel, with the ability to switch between banks of eight channels. Each channel strip also features the common commands you would expect on a mixing console like Mute and Solo as well as a Record Arm button which makes quickly recording takes smooth and simple.

Arguably one of the most important functions the Icon Platform M+ provides is transport control. Buttons for play, stop and record keep the common controls only a click away, whilst the jog wheel gives the ability to quickly move backwards and forwards through your project. Finally, zoom functionality means you can take a closer look at sections of your track without fiddly keyboard shortcuts.

The Icon Platform M+ is also modular, meaning that you can start with a single unit and add the Icon Platform X+ expander units to create a controller with up to 32 channels.

When paired with the iMap software from Icon, the Platform M+ can be customised to suit a range of other uses, including as a MIDI-based expression controller for virtual instruments or adjusted to better suit third-party plugins like MIDI2LR which we are using for this tutorial.

We recently released a video that outlines some of the ways a DAW Controller like the Platform M+ can improve your setup, which you can check out here.

Icon Platform M+ - Synthax Audio UKAdobe Lightroom Classic – Non-destructive photo editing

Adobe Lightroom Classic is an application for editing and organising photos. Used mainly for the editing of RAW files – a format that retains all the information photographed by the camera – one of the attractions of Lightroom is the ability to edit photos in a non-destructive manner. In essence, this means a wide array of adjustments can be made without overwriting the original image.

Lightroom Classic’s editing section – known as the Develop section – is built around a slider-based interface, which works perfectly with the design of the Platform M+ and its nine motorised faders.

    MIDI2LR – Talking Lightroom’s Language

MIDI2LR is a free-to-download application that translates MIDI Control Change (or CC) commands into actions that Lightroom can understand. Once any control has been touched on the controller, MIDI2LR recognises the MIDI message and this control can now be assigned to a function within Lightroom.

There is a large range of available commands that can be selected; from basic tone adjustments, to “Quick Develop” presets and export options, MIDI2LR can help improve your Lightroom workflow.

In our tutorial video, we show you how pairing some the commands in MIDI2LR can be combined with the Platform M+ to create a controller that mirrors Lightroom’s “Basic Tone” panel.

MIDI2LR is free to download, though you can donate to this project here.

Using the Platform M+ with Adobe Lightroom Classic – Step-by-Step Guide

    Installing MIDI2LR

    1 – Download MIDI2LR here.

2 – Follow the MIDI2LR installer, choosing an install location that is easy to find – you will need to access this later. In the tutorial, we install this to the main “Pictures” directory.

3 – Open Lightroom, and go to File > Plugin-Manager.

4 – In the bottom-left corner, click “Add” and navigate to wherever the plugin was installed to and click “Add Plugin”.

5 – If installation has been completed correctly, MIDI2LR will open.

If you require additional installation information, you can find it here.

Next, the Platform M+ has to be set to User Defined mode. This is achieved by following the below.

    1 – Turn on the Platform M+.

2 – As soon as you turn on the Platform M+, press the illuminated “Sel” button above channels 7 until the red LED over channel 4 is lit. User Defined mode is now selected.

Now that the Platform M+ is in User Defined mode and iMap is installed, we can tweak some of the controls so that they interact with MIDI2LR better.

1 – Once iMap is open, click “Connect” and select Platform M+.

2 – When connected, change the Control Mode to “User Define”.

3 – Under each fader icon is a mouse pointer which indicates the touch-sensitive control portion of the fader. Click the pointer on fader one and change “Msg Type” to “Null”. This will remove the touch-sensitivity, which itself could be accidentally used as a command control in MIDI2LR.

4 – Repeat Step 3 for all faders. Note that the Master fader cannot be changed.

5 – Click “Send Data”, which will load this layout onto the Platform M+.

It is important to click “Save File” when this has been done, as iMap resets all values when it is closed and opened again.

    MIDI2LR Screenshot - Synthax Audio UKUsing MIDI2LR

With the plugin installed and iMap configured, getting started with MIDI2LR couldn’t be easier.

1 – Move or touch a control on the Platform M+ (such as a fader or button) and this control will be shown in MIDI2LR.

2 – Click the drop-down menu currently labelled “Unassigned” to reveal the full list of commands that can be assigned to the control.

3 – Choose a command, and this is now assigned.

Much like the iMap software it is important to save the MIDI2LR file, as this resets to the default state upon closing. This also means you can set up the Platform M+ for different tasks by saving different templates for specific jobs.

  6. Why should you use a DAW Controller? (with the Icon Platform M+)

Comments Off on Why should you use a DAW Controller? (with the Icon Platform M+)

Recording and mixing with a USB-MIDI control surface (aka a DAW Controller) for hands-on, tactile control.

Moving away from the mouse and keyboard…

There’s no doubt that recording software has made recording and mixing more accessible than ever, with even the cheapest of computers now able to handle multi-track recording.

Whereas previously you needed access to a room full of expensive specialist equipment, and the knowledge to work with mediums like tape, DATs or standalone hard disk recorders, it’s now standard procedure to use a computer for pretty much all of your recording needs.

Most of the best vintage gear has been emulated and made available in much cheaper plugin form – and the ability to run multiple instances of those plugins is a godsend – and some of the best mix engineers in the world are happy to operate entirely ‘in-the-box’.

Traditional mixing still revolves around the use of a console however, and for good reason. Nothing beats having a bunch of real faders in front of you, and many engineers feel the ’emotional connection’ to the art of mixing suffers when working solely with a mouse and keyboard.

What’s more, having a set of dedicated controls at your finger tips can really help speed up your workflow when recording and mixing, as well as offering up potential for use in live performance, as well as podcasting and streaming (for triggering sounds and scene switching, and even controlling lighting).

    What is a DAW Controller?

Icon QCon Pro XS - NAMM 2020 - Synthax Audio UK &

The term ‘DAW controller’ can be applied to any piece of hardware that has been designed to interact with a Digital Audio Workstation (such as Ableton, Cubase, Logic or Pro Tools), with a selection of physical controls like faders, encoders and buttons that allow the user to make adjustments in their chosen software – usually via the trusty MIDI protocol – and providing a similar level of control as that of a mixing desk.

Also known as a ‘MIDI controller’ or a ‘control surface’, DAW Controllers come in a range of shapes and sizes, however the term generally refers to devices that emulate a traditional mixer, for control over levels and panning, along with buttons on each channel for record arm, mute and solo. A jog wheel is also usually included for easy navigation within a project, plus transport control shortcuts for things like global record, zooming in and out, and start/stop buttons for playback.

Unlike a mixer which has inputs and outputs for connecting analogue and digital sources (e.g. mics, instruments, effects and other studio equipment), a DAW controller doesn’t pass any audio itself – it’s simply there to send control messages to any supported recording software, which responds to the movements you make via the controller.

These days most DAW controllers will connect with a Mac or PC via USB, although some still feature MIDI I/O for connecting MIDI cables directly with other studio hardware (e.g. hardware synthesizers).

Icon Pro Audio & DirectOut - NAMM 2020 - Synthax Audio UK

    Why use a DAW Controller?

The main benefits of a DAW controller is having a set of dedicated controls directly accessible at all times, allowing for quick adjustments to a recording on the fly – including for multiple channels – and for the easy recording of real time automation.

You can also assign a controller to control aspects of virtual instruments and plugins – usually via your DAW or plugin’s ‘MIDI Learn’ functions – as well as having dedicated buttons for any special functions you use frequently, or even for triggering sounds during a performance or livestream.

Transport controls also make it easy to move around your projects, setting up loop points and recording overdubs, as well as controls for zooming in and out.

Another often cited – but somewhat less tangible – benefit of controllers, is how they can help take the focus off of your computer screen, and instead keep you focused on purely using your ears, as well as allowing you to ‘play the mixer’ in a way that’s trickier with just a mouse and keyboard. Changing FX send amounts, automating panning mid-way through a track, or riding the fader of instruments that benefit from a more dynamic and expressive performance (e.g. vocals and strings) – all of these tasks can feel a lot more organic when performed with a set of faders or encoders.

Finally DAW Controllers are also generally a lot cheaper than a full-size console, and generally smaller too, making them great for smaller spaces and mobile recording. They’re also great practise if you plan to eventually move to working with a larger console, and many offer cross-platform flexibility, making it easy to switch over to a different DAW. Default patches are usually offered for a variety of DAWs out of the box, and custom patches can be saved and loaded for use with instruments and effects plugins.

Some controllers such as the Platform M+ are even modular, giving you the option to add more faders and buttons to your setup at a later date.

Already an owner of the full size Icon QCon Pro X and QCon Pro XS expanders (watch the review for those here), Alex found plenty to like about the Platform M+ (and optional D2 Display), which features the same 100mm, 10-Bit motorised faders as its larger sibling.

Alex says “I love it! I’ve used it quite a bit already, I was just in Las Vegas filming, doing some production work and I had it set up there – it’s everything that I loved in the QCon Pro X, works exactly the same, but it’s just way smaller.”

“This thing is so compact, light-weight and easy to use that it’s a perfect solution if you’re going to be travelling around.”

“It’s just a great little control surface that pretty much is just a mirror image of its big brother, just scaled-down a little bit. It was perfect for my needs, thinking about having a mobile production rig that can travel anywhere in the world, but still having this hands-on control that I love so much, it’s a fantastic solution for that.”

Icon Platform Nano - 02 - Synthax Audio UKTake Control Of Your DAW

Lightweight, durable and easily transportable, the Platform Nano features a single touch-sensitive, 100mm motorised fader with 10-Bit resolution, for precise control when setting levels and recording automation.
High-speed connectivity is delivered via a USB 3 Type B connector, which functions as a MIDI port to the connected computer and compatible DAW software, whilst also providing power to the Platform Nano itself (USB bus-powered).
A selection of illuminated, colour-coded buttons gives you quick access to functions like solo, mute and record arm; playback controls (play, stop, fast forward, rewind, loop on/off); zooming in/out; and track buttons for easy selection of individual channels and banking (shifting in groups of eight channels at a time).
Other features include a jog-wheel for fast navigation of your projects; dual-function rotary controls (rotate and select) for panning, aux send levels, EQ etc; and a backlit LCD for displaying time information, as well as names and control values for each channel.

Hands-On Control With Your Favourite DAW

The Platform Nano supports the Mackie MCU (Mackie Control Universal) and Mackie HUI (Human User Interface) protocols, for seamless integration with all compatible music production software. Overlays are included for use with all of the most popular DAWs, including Ableton Live, Adobe Audition, Bitwig, Cubase/Nuendo, Digital Performer, FL Studio, Logic Pro X, Pro Tools, Reaper, Reason, Samplitude, Sonar, and Studio One.
A User-Define Mode also enables you to create your own customised MIDI-maps, using Icon’s free iMap Software. Each button and encoder (along with the motorised fader) can be programmed by the user to perfectly suit any task, opening up a variety of potential uses in the studio. As such, adventurous users could assign the motorised fader or encoder knobs to control functions of plug-ins and virtual instruments.
On the rear panel, two 1/4-inch inputs allow for control via footswitches. Mobile battery power and wireless Bluetooth operation are also possible via the optional Icon PN-1 module (coming soon), allowing for power via a rechargeable battery when using the Platform Nano on the go. An inbuilt Kensington lock also provides a level of security.

  10. Icon Pro Audio Platform M+ controller integrates with QSC Touchmix and Sound Devices Scorpio

Comments Off on Icon Pro Audio Platform M+ controller integrates with QSC Touchmix and Sound Devices Scorpio

Icon Pro Audio Platform M+ - QSC Touchmix and Sound Devices Scorpio - Synthax Audio UKCompact, USB-MIDI controller with motorized faders enhances live audio and field recording setups

We’re pleased to announce that the Icon Platform M+ DAW controller, Icon’s compact and mobile control surface, can now be used alongside QSC’s Touchmix 30 mixing desk and Sound Devices Scorpio location sound recorder.

In addition to its popularity as a studio controller, the Platform M+ brings tactile control to live audio, broadcast and location sound recording setups. With 100mm, 10-Bit motorized faders, plus transport controls, encoders and illuminated buttons, the Platform M+ offers many benefits for automation and easy recall of settings, alongside more precise control of parameters during live recording and playback.

    QSC TouchMix 30 PRO v2.0

Perfect for production professionals, musicians and bands as well as live performance venues, the TouchMix-30 Pro’s 32 mixing channels (24 Mic/Line, 6 Line, Stereo USB) and 16 outputs offer tremendous signal management flexibility for a wide range of applications with touchscreen fader control. The Touchmix 30 Pro’s latest firmware update adds the capability to interface with third-party external control surfaces with motorized faders. And QSC’s controller of choice is the Icon Pro Audio Platform M+, as demonstrated in the below video.

QSC customers have been asking for a tactile option to the Touchmix 30’s touchscreen faders. After sampling all the controllers available on the market, the team at QSC found that the feature set of the Platform M+ was a perfect compliment to their compact digital mixer. And so, QSC’s engineers took their time to integrate control using the Platform M+ into their latest firmware update.

    Sound Devices Scorpio Mixer-Recorder

Scorpio is a 32 channel, 36 track mixer-recorder and the most powerful product ever designed by Sound Devices. With 16 mic/line preamplifiers, 32 channels of Dante in and out, AES in and out, 12 analogue outputs and multiple headphone outputs, Scorpio is well-suited for any production scenario. A fully-customizable routing matrix enables audio professionals to send any input to any channel, bus, or output. Up to 12 buses may be individually mixed. Due to its compact form factor, the Scorpio is equally at home over-the-shoulder or in a mobile rig.

And the team from Sound Devices chose the Platform M+ as their go to motorized fader system. Now you can fit an entire 32 channel recording system (with an automated mixer with motorized faders) into your backpack!

Icon Platform M+ and D2 Display

The Icon Platform M+ control surface is a compact desktop mixing controller that’s great for mobile setups or where space is at a premium. Features include 9 x touch-sensitive, motorised faders;  8 x dual-function encoder knobs; Jog wheel for fast search and control; illuminated buttons for each channel (including Select, Mute, Solo and Record); 6 x illuminated transport buttons including Play, Stop, Record, Rewind, Fast Forward and Loop; USB 2.0 connectivity; Class-compliant with Windows and Mac OSX; and expandable up to 32-channels (with 1 x Platform M+ and 3 x units of Icon Platform X+ Fader Extenders).

Icon QCon Pro X – ALL IN Review

Recording website Consordini.com’s Alex Scott has put together a review of the Icon QCon Pro X control surface and QCon Pro XS fader expanders. A professional engineer and composer, Alex has actually been using this setup for the past 2 years in his work, and has kindly agreed to give his opinion on Icon’s cost-effective DAW controllers.

“It almost, at the end of the day, feels like you’re mixing on an old-school analogue console,” says Alex. “Like an SSL, or a Neve or something like that. It’s just a fabulously intuitive and fast workflow, it saves so much time from not having to sit there with your mouse and find all those tiny little knobs on-screen, fiddly little pan controls and stuff.”

“You can almost turn off your screens altogether once you’ve got your session arranged, and just mix exactly as you would mix on an analogue console. It’s just so much faster [than using a mouse], you just zip through stuff – you want to solo? You want to mute? You want to pan something around? It’s just phenomenal, I absolutely love it!”

Check out the video above to find out what Alex thinks about recording, mixing and editing with the Icon QCon Pro X and Pro XS.

Icon QCon Pro X – Take Control Of Your DAW

The Icon QCon Pro X is a USB-MIDI control surface designed to bring hands-on control to in-the-box recording and mixing. With jog wheel and transport controls, a selection of illuminated buttons, and a 12-LED meter bridge, and of course the 9 motorised, touch-sensitive faders with 10-bit resolution, the QCon Pro X gives you complete, tactile control over your DAW.

With support for all of the most popular Digital Audio Workstations, the included DAW overlays provide you with shortcuts indicators for working with your favourite DAW. You can even upgrade to one of Icon’s APP panels for a permanently installed, metal shortcut overlay.

As the flagship in the range, the QCon Pro X also features a large meter bridge for keeping an eye on your levels from afar. 12 LED’s on each channel provide the usual green, amber and red lighting system to let you know when you’re hitting your mics or inputs too hard.

Expand your setup with the Icon QCon Pro XS

    Icon Platform Series

If you like the look of the QCon Pro X, but don’t have the space in your current setup, Icon also released a series of smaller controllers, the Platform Series. Designed to be used where space is at a premium, the Platform M+ and Platform X+ expanders gives you similar options to the QCon Pro X in a smaller and more mobile footprint.

Additional banks of faders can be added via the Platform X+, which again allows for up to 3 units to be connected to a Platform M+, for a total of 32 motorised faders.

It’s that time of year again with the annual NAMM Show currently underway in Anaheim, California. One of the largest music instrument and pro audio gatherings in the world, NAMM is frequently chosen by distributors and manufacturers to reveal their latest upcoming products.

Here’s our roundup of the latest news from RME, Ferrofish, Lauten and Icon Pro Audio.

    Lauten Audio - LS-308 Microphone - NAMM 2019 - Synthax Audio UK

    Lauten Audio

Lauten have chosen NAMM 2019 to unveil the new LS-308 microphone (pictured left), joining the LS-208 front-address mic (pictured right) as part of their latest “Synergy Series” line. Tough, durable with excellent isolation, the Synergy Series is built primarily with live audio and broadcast in mind.

Lauten Audio - LS-208 Microphone - NAMM 2019 - Synthax Audio UKHaving started off as a manufacturer of high-end studio microphones, the Synergy Series is the Lauten’s first foray into microphones designed for life on the road. The quality of the Lauten Signature and Series Black mics is sure to carry over into these new microphones, with features impressive such as extremely high dynamic range capturing capabilities (135 dB), and mix engineer Darrell Thorp already singing their praises.

When asked about the new Synergy Series, Lauten’s founder Brian Loudenslager was keen to point out flexibility as a key factor in their design, with the LS-208 and LS-308 equally adept at instrument and voice recording. “Try it on drums – any kind of drum!” Brian told us. “These mics are completely road worthy – the large diaphragm, the rejection and the robustness, the capsule mounted in an internal rubber shock mount… We’ve had them successfully out on the road with several tours already.”

Icon Platform Nano - NAMM 2019 - Synthax Audio UKIcon Pro Audio

Icon were keen to show off their latest addition to their modular Platform range of control surfaces, designed for smaller studios and mobile recording setups.

Announced earlier this week, the Icon Platform Nano is a compact USB-MIDI control surface with transport and channel strip controls, rotary encoder, illuminated shortcut keys, and a 100 mm, 10-Bit motorised fader.

Being a modular system, the Platform Series is designed to give musicians and engineers the ability to create their own custom recording, editing and mixing setups, and the Platform Nano will be especially convenient when space is at a premium.

Further options are available for larger studios, with the full-sized QCon Pro X and QCon G2 Series offering more control.

Ellis Hall - RME Audio - NAMM 2019 - Synthax Audio UKRME

RME’s focus this year is split between live performance and audio networking, with a host of musicians performing live from the booth including film composer Adam Barber, Andy Grammer’s FOH team, metal guitarist Michael Batio, legendary soul artist Official Ellis Hall, Gulli Briem (drummer of the Icelandic Band Mezzoforte), Brazilian guitarist Lari Basilio, and bassist Chuck Rainey with veteran drummer John Martinez.

RME has carved out a niche as something of a go-to for live setups, thanks in no small part to the industry-renowned, ‘rock-solid’ drivers and build. Here in the UK alone, we regularly specify RME-based playback systems for touring bands (often alongside Ferrofish AD/DA converters), with previous clients including Elton John, Iron Maiden, Bjork, Robbie Williams, Gorrilaz, Depeche Mode, Muse, Placebo, Kasabian, Bring Me The Horizon, Harry Styles (and previously One Direction), Olly Murs, Lily Allen, Ellie Goulding, Disclosure and Clean Bandit, along with broadcast events like Wimbledon and the Olympics.

RME Digiface Dante and AVBThe other side to RME’s NAMM booth is a focus on audio networking, with several of RME’s latest products featuring networking connectivity, such as the Digiface Dante and Digiface AVB, along with the RME M-32 Pro AD and DA converters. TotalMix Remote also allows for control of RME audio interfaces over a network.

RME’s TotalMix FX also adds further flexibility to AoIP. With the Digiface Dante for example, TotalMix FX gives you a super-powered Dante Controller, complete with EQ, compression, level metering and Reverb / Delay on all audio channels. What’s more, all of these features are controllable wirelessly, either from a computer in a different location, or even with an Apple iPad, when used with TotalMix Remote.

Ferrofish - Microphone Preamplifier Teaser - Synthax Audio UKFerrofish

Ferrofish recently teased on their Facebook page about a new microphone preamp that’s currently in development.

German manufacturers traditionally choose the Musikmesse show in Frankfurt to reveal their new products, so this one is currently still under wraps. That being said, we’re expecting it to be a 1U unit that shares similarities with the A32 and Pulse 16 converters, providing excellent sound quality at a highly cost-effective price per channel.
