The introduction of Apple’s OS X 10.11, or El Capitan, has prompted many compatibility questions for audio interface users everywhere. You only have to scan the forums to find that the biggest concern is, of course, Apple’s decision to stop support of their FireWire Core Audio driver. This has resulted in some audio interface manufacturers having to halt their FireWire development, leaving many of their users high and dry, while at least one other manufacturer is faced with having to rewrite their USB drivers altogether.
RME have also had many of their users contact them with the same compatibility questions. But, RME are pleased to report that their drivers work without any known issues under 10.11 as well as 10.11.1. In fact, RME did not have to change or modify their drivers at all for El Capitan, which in itself is a testament to RME’s code quality and driver design.
When asked about the end of Apple’s FireWire support, Matthias Carstens (RME Head of Development) said “We are not affected by Apple’s decision as RME develops their own drivers for all devices, and therefore FireWire is and will stay supported for Apple OS X in the foreseeable future.”
