The latest update to the TotalMix FX iOS App for iPad is now available from the App Store
If you're an owner of a class-compliant RME audio interface, then you have the option to record with an Apple iPad with RME's TotalMix FX for iPad app, turning your iPad into a powerful multi-track recording studio. With the TotalMix FX iOS app, you can control your interface in the same way as when using a Mac or PC, giving you access to a portable recording and live mixing solution that you can control straight from your iPad.
By making use of the background audio functions found in iOS, the TotalMix FX app allows you to seamlessly switch between your recording app and TotalMix FX without a hitch during playback and recording.
What’s new in TotalMix FX for iPad Version 1.32?
Along with some small bug fixes and performance enhancements, TotalMix FX 1.32 also adds support for RME’s two new upcoming audio interfaces, the RME Fireface UFX+ and MADIface Pro*. As both of these interfaces feature the MADI protocol, you’ll be able to record or playback an extremely large number of tracks when combined with a converter or mixing desk that supports MADI – up to 64 input channels and 64 output channels at 48 kHz / 24 Bit. This makes for an incredibly powerful portable solution!
*Please note that the MADIface Pro supports 24 channels playback/record, 4 from the analogue I/O and 20 from MADI.
The TotalMix FX iOS app requires an iPad 2 or later running iOS 6.1 and up, and offers fully-functional compatibility when used with the RME Fireface UFX+, Fireface UFX and Fireface 802 (including DURec), as well as support for the Babyface, Babyface Pro (although the Reverb and Echo effects are unavailable) and MADIface Pro.
Here at Synthax Audio UK, we recommend making the connection between the devices with an official Apple Camera Connection Kit to ensure reliability and performance.
Use Lemur or TouchOSC to wirelessly control your RME device with an iPad
If you'd like to go one step further and mix your project or show wirelessly, you could also make use of a MIDI control surface app such as TouchOSC or Lemur. These apps allows you to send virtual MIDI messages over a wireless network. You could for example perform a sound-check from anywhere inside the venue – another great way to combine your RME audio interface with your iPad!
