Audio Media International reviews the Ferrofish A32 AD/DA Converter. Click here to read the full review.
The Ferrofish A32 is a 32 in, 32 out AD/DA and format converter produced by German pro audio manufacturer Ferrofish. Ferrofish originally made their name with the Ferrofish A16 MK-II, a cost-effective 16 in / 16 out AD and DA converter that proved particularly popular for live sound. We've previously spoken to various engineers about using the original Ferrofish A16 MK-II as part of the touring rigs of well-known artists as Lily Allen, Disclosure, Olly Murs and One Direction.
Thanks to the continued success of the A16 MK-II, the designers at Ferrofish decided to see if they could cram even more I/O into a 1U housing. Enter the Ferrofish A32, which has just received its first review from pro audio magazine Audio Media International.
Ferrofish A32 Review
In his review for Audio Media International, reviewer Simon Allen likened the sound to that of RME Audio's latest devices. Simon writes, “Sonically, the A32 is thankfully what I expected it to be. Interestingly, but perhaps unsurprisingly, I would class the A32 in the same bracket as RME’s later products. The sound is very clean and natural, which you would expect from a device that might be a ‘set and forget’ unit as part of a larger installation.”
“The usability of the unit is refreshingly simple in a
world where we all need an IT degree to just load a project.”
Ferrofish A32 Specs
With its high channel-count, the inclusion of both ADAT and MADI I/O, redundancy options, extensive routing and mixing possibilities, plus other features like the ability to lock the A32 with a 6-digit pin code – a handy feature for preventing accidental changes once you’ve set up – the Ferrofish A32 is the perfect addition to live, studio and broadcast production setups.
The 64 balanced analogue I/O's are connected via D-Sub connections, and 4 x TFT screens give you control over each channel. There's also an onboard comprehensive manual, accessible at any time direct from the unit itself, and viewable via the TFT screens. All of this is offered at an extremely competitive price-point.
Ferrofish A32 Dante
Simon was also keen to point out the imminent arrival of the Ferrofish A32 Dante. Boasting the same great styling, list of features and sound quality as the Ferrofish A32, the Dante version allows users to connect the A32 to any Dante network, providing a fantastic Analogue-MADI-Dante bridge option for users who regularly work with Audinate’s popular AoIP format.
The Ferrofish A32 Dante has all of the same features of its sibling, plus the addition of Dante I/O.
