RME Audio’s 12-channel, network-capable microphone preamp picks up a ‘Highly Commended Award’ in Sound On Sound.

We’re delighted to announce that the RME 12Mic has been awarded a Highly Commended Award for 2022 by Sound On Sound Magazine, as voted for by you the readers!

Each year Sound On Sound recognises the best in professional audio “innovation and contemporary design”, with nominees for the ‘Gear of the Year Awards’ chosen by the SOS editorial team, and the winners voted for by the SOS readership.

This is also the second time in recent months that an RME product has been chosen for a Sound On Sound accolade, with the RME HDSPe AIO Pro sound card also receiving an Editor’s Choice award at the end of last year.

We’re thrilled therefore to see the 12Mic picking up this highly-coveted award from one of the industry’s most widely-read publications. Big thanks to Sound On Sound and of course a massive thanks to all of you who voted!

The RME 12Mic is a 12-channel, remote-controllable microphone preamplifier designed for use in high-end studio recording, live audio, and location sound and music recording.

First reviewed by Sound On Sound’s Technical Editor Hugh Robjohns back in February last year, who described the 12Mic as “clean, neutral and quiet, whilst offering enormous gain
with impressive headroom and configurability”, the 12Mic represents the cutting-edge of RME’s next-generation preamp design.

Combining the ubiquitous ADAT and MADI digital audio formats with MILAN-compliant AVB/TSN (Audio Video Bridging / Time-Sensitive Networking), the 12Mic allows for easy integration with any of RME’s ADAT or MADI-equipped audio interfaces, for a future-proof device with maximum flexibility.

Extensive front-panel and software remote control combine with RME’s latest transparent microphone preamps – with each analogue input featuring an SNR of 121 dBA (118 dB RMS unweighted) and 75 dB of gain – whilst the on-board headphone output (which can also function as a dual mono unbalanced output / mono balanced line level output) allows for direct monitoring of any incoming or outgoing audio signals, or indeed any channel on the network.

Along with a set of user-friendly front panel controls, the RME 12Mic is also remote-controllable via RME’s free browser-based Web Remote application.

This simple interface provides an easy method for adjusting any of the input channels – gains, 48v phantom power, and switching between the XLR and TRS inputs – allowing for easy recall of settings and control at a distance.

Channel routing via RME’s software GUI is simple and straight-forward – simply click and drag an input to an output – and can be accessed from any location on a network.

SteadyClock FS

The RME 12Mic also features SteadyClock FS, the latest iteration of RME’s highly-regarded digital clocking and filtering technology, that measures and suppresses jitter values down an area called the femtosecond (fs).

Accurate clocking is a fundamental element of digital audio, with signals reliant on the clocking frequency for the correct representation of audio bits and sample time reference. SteadyClock FS ensures recordings are captured to the finest detail and definition, replicating the source material to its fullest depth and clarity.

The RME 12Mic can expand any ADAT, MADI or AVB-equipped recording setup with 12 additional high-end microphone preamps.

Next-Generation Networked Audio

Forming part of the RME audio networking range, the 12Mic sits proudly alongside RME’s other professional AoIP devices, allowing for signal routing and device operation via the open-source AVB/TSN, and using standard Cat5e ethernet cabling.

High-end, multi-channel analogue to digital and digital to analogue conversion comes in the form of the 32-channel M-32 Pro AD and DA, as well as the combined 16-/10-channel AD/DA, the RME M-1610 Pro.

A 4-channel version of the 12Mic – the RME AVB Tool – is also available, which has also been designed to act as a compact monitoring solution when connected to any AVB network.

Other devices in the range include the RME Digiface AVB audio interface, and the RME Digiface Dante, a 256-channel USB bus-powered Dante and MADI interface (and bi-directional Dante <> MADI converter).
