RME Audio: Creating “Analogue Plugins” in Logic Pro and Ableton with RME Audio Interfaces

Many modern studios, both home and professional, blend analogue hardware and computer recording equipment to create hybrid production setups.

Previously, RME have demonstrated how to route and mix hardware insert effects in TotalMix FX, showing how to use submixes in RME’s powerful routing software to add external EQs and compressors to a mixing session. Now, RME have released a pair of tutorials explaining how to incorporate hardware effects like compressors, delays and reverbs into Logic Pro and Ableton.

Both Logic Pro and Ableton feature built-in tools that make it possible to treat external analogue hardware as plugins on any audio or MIDI track. Both Logic and Ableton solutions provide a simple interface that allows you to select the input and output channels, alongside adjustments for latency.

In the case of Logic Pro, the I/O utility also features a Latency Detection tool, which measures the real-time latency of the recording setup by detecting the delay between output and input signal.

Watch both videos below, or read on to learn more about RME Audio Interfaces and TotalMix FX routing software.

TotalMix FX - RME Babyface Pro FS - Synthax Audio UKTotalMix FX

One of the key features of RME audio interfaces is the inclusion of TotalMix FX, an extremely powerful built-in DSP mixer and accompanying software. With TotalMix FX, it’s possible to route any hardware or software input to any physical output, offering near-limitless mixing possibilities. TotalMix FX works using a built-in FPGA inside RME audio interfaces, taking the processing strain away from your computer.

Totalmix FX also features a full Control Room section, with shortcuts for commonly used functions like Speaker A/B switching, Dim, Mono, Level Recall and Talkback.

What’s more, mixer states and controls, such as 48V phantom power, gain levels and routings can all be saved as “snapshots”, making it easy to recall previous routings at the touch of a button. TotalMix even makes it possible to hide unused channels, so that only the levels you require are visible.

RME Fireface UCX II - Portrait - Synthax Audio UKRME Audio Interfaces

RME have spent over twenty years dedicated to creating devices that are both flexible and powerful. Designed to cover a wide range of scenarios and applications, RME audio interfaces are regularly seen in recording studios, live sound rigs and broadcast audio setups. From the 24-channel Babyface Pro FS and 40-channel Fireface UCX II bringing professional audio to a portable form factor, to the 394-channel MADIface XT that is perfectly suited for high channel count situations, there is an RME audio interface to suit every professional audio recording setup.

Alongside their flexibility, RME devices are known for their extensive connectivity. Many of their interfaces fit a large amount of digital and analogue I/O options into the small footprints. ADAT is a mainstay on their interfaces for easy expansion to a wide range of studio hardware, whilst MADI features on a variety of RME’s recording devices for situations where larger channel counts need to be transferred across long distances. It is also possible to convert between digital formats, adding another layer to the flexibility offered on RME devices.

Many of RME’s interfaces have been designed with portability in mind too. The entirely bus-powered Babyface Pro FS is a truly portable interface, offering phantom power to both of its mic preamps without the need for external power. RME’s latest interface release, the Fireface UCX II can run entirely independently of a computer, including the ability to record directly to a USB hard drive.

The popular Digiface range brings high-channel count recording capabilities to a nearly pocket-sized USB interface for an array of audio formats. The Digiface USB is a bus-powered 66-channel ADAT interface, whilst the popular MADIface USB offers 128 MADI channels (64 input and 64 output) in an incredibly small form factor. Alongside ADAT and MADI, the Digiface range contains interfaces for a selection of audio networking formats. For AVB systems, the Digiface AVB is a 256-channel USB interface. For those using Audinate’s Dante audio networking protocol, RME’s Digiface Dante also offers 128 input and 128 output channels. The newest addition to the range is the Digiface Ravenna, a collaboration with DirectOut which is based on the Digiface Dante with the addition of AES67 and ST2110-30/31 support.

Alongside their power and flexibility, RME interfaces have long been known for their reliability. Designed in-house by their team of engineers, RME’s drivers are revered for being rock solid, whilst the company’s commitment to updating their drivers has meant that products from as back as 2001 still work perfectly on the latest operating systems.
