Full Sail University adds pair of Calrec Brio broadcast consoles to their media training facilities
Full Sail University in Florida is the latest organisation to add two new Calrec Audio Brio consoles to their training facilities. With broadcast-focused features such as delay resources, dynamics, integrated talkback and multiple monitor outputs, the new desks will provide students with hands-on training in mixing audio, with the second desk employed for events at the university’s campus venue.
Specialising in education for entertainment, media, arts and technology, Full Sail offers a range of study both in-person and online. Students are already familiar with Calrec hardware due to the university’s Calrec Summa console, a permanent feature of the Show Production bachelor’s degree programme, which the students use for mixing a wide range of live events and video projects.
“We really like the Summa’s layout and features, but one of the main features that really appealed to us is the Hydra2 modular rack,” explains Vince Lepore, Course Director of the Show Production course. “We were able to load it with a mix of analogue I/O and Dante® cards. Our entire production facility uses Dante to transport audio between the different rooms, so having the Summa on the Dante network as well was a bonus. The modular rack also gives us the ability to be flexible in the future with our I/O, and of course it allows us to teach the Hydra2 network to our students.”

With the university’s previous experience with the Calrec Summa console, upgrading their film department with Calrec’s compact Brio 36 console was a natural decision. Duane Moore, Course Director of Broadcast Production, explains how Calrec’s use throughout the broadcast industry was also a leading factor. “The students are using the Calrec Brio to learn live production audio and to mix sound for their live shows in the broadcast studio,” says Duane. “We chose the Brio because Calrec consoles are high-quality, they have the features needed to teach audio for live broadcast, and are likely what students will use in the industry after graduating.”
A second Brio console was also installed at ‘Full Sail Live’, the university’s state-of-the-art campus performance venue. “The Brio console is a big upgrade for our students from the analogue board they were using before” says Jeff Planck, Program Director of Film. “With the touch of a few buttons, they can now create and use preset ‘shows’ and ‘memories’ that customise the Brio for their specific show. The Brio also provides convenient network interoperability with the other studios on campus featuring Calrec consoles.”

Scott Dansby, Director of Industry Relations at Full Sail, elaborated further on the decision to invest in the new Calrec consoles. “We chose to purchase all of our units based on Calrec’s reputation of making high-quality, live-broadcast audio consoles. The new Brio’s deliver the core functionality that students need to learn in a broadcast audio console, but at a price point that made sense for us. Since these systems are used throughout the industry, we knew we’d be giving our students experience on a board they’ll likely be using in the future, and throughout their careers.”
