Pro Tools Expert’s James Ivey takes the Lauten Audio Series Black microphones for a spin
Music production website Pro Tools Expert has reviewed the Series Black range from Lauten Audio, the entry-level studio microphones from American manufacturer Lauten Audio.
All three mics in the Series Black range have been receiving a variety of highly positive reviews lately, with the LA-120s recently highlighted by MusicTech as “a versatile, and smooth sounding microphone”, and FutureMusic finding that the LA-220 FET condenser gave a “£2k valve condenser a damn good run across the board” in their tests.
Finally, the LA-320 vacuum tube has been widely praised by a number of magazines, and even impressed Vintage King and Produce Like A Pro as a comparing favourably with a number of far more expensive mics in their extensive microphone shootout.

In the above video, James uses all three mics to create a short track, recording acoustic guitar and drums, as well as the voiceover for the video. Each track is recorded dry with no effects, and with the built-in high and low-cut filter filters kept flat to show the original tone of each mic.
One word that keeps coming up in descriptions of the Series Black is ‘versatile’, with James even getting a great snare drum recording with the LA-220. He was also so impressed with the LA-120s (which he uses as overheads), that he decided to add them to his own mic collection.
Lauten Audio LA-320
It was clear James found plenty to like about each mic. He uses the LA-320 for the guitar and voiceovers, concluding that “it sounds great, [even with] no processing, no EQ, and with just a little bit of push from the top end of the console, but nothing really at all.”

Lauten Audio LA-220
Of the LA-220 James says, “I’ve been using this quite controversially on a snare drum as a second snare drum top mic. It sounds absolutely fantastic, with a nice thick tone, and again, not much work to make this sound like a killer snare drum mic!”

Lauten Audio LA-120s
