German high-end headphone specialist’s new masterpiece combines the company’s latest technologies with exquisite materials and a high-end sound.
Back in 2008, Ultrasone created a piece of headphone history with the launch of the Ultrasone Edition 8. Combining a luxurious build with pristine sound quality, the Edition 8 fast became the best-selling handmade headphone in the world, firmly establishing Ultrasone as one of the leading brands in high-end headphone manufacture and design.
Now in 2016, Ultrasone releases their latest masterpiece, the culmination of the company’s 25 years of research into headphone development and design: introducing the all new Ultrasone Edition 8 EX.
Innovation And Precision
As a mainstay of audophile headphones, Ultrasone’s mission has been to continually delight enthusiasts with unique, eye-catching designs, ground-breaking new audio technologies, and of course incredible sonic reproduction. With the Edition 8 EX, Ultrasone continues this tradition by presenting a stylish new headphone, hand-crafted from a range of exquisite materials chosen specifically for their acoustic properties.
The main focus is the headphones' titanium-coated, 40mm Mylar transducers, with a frequency response of 5 – 46000 Hz that goes far beyond the realm of human hearing, capturing the subtle nuances and upper harmonics produced by many instruments. Also, with a relatively low impedance of 38 Ohms, the Edition 8 EX are easy enough to drive from popular portable media players such as smart phones and iPods. So, hi-fidelity listening at home as part of a high-end system, or on the go, whether paired with a portable headphone amplifier or directly to a media device.
Other notable features include the dark ceramic inlays and laser-engraved Ultrasone logo; high-gloss chrome-plated ear cups and aluminium headband; and detachable leather ear cushions (connected via four strong magnets, removable by applying a slight pressure). Made from the finest Ethiopian long-haired sheep leather, the ear pads have been chosen for their ability to provide comfort and isolation. All the materials used to build the Ultrasone Edition 8 EX are both light-weight and highly durable, and the headphone has been described as having an 'extremely precise build-quality'.
The new Edition 8 EX is also the first mid-size headphone to feature both balanced inputs and the company's S-Logic® EX technology, drawing inspiration from the original Edition 8 whilst furthering its legacy as a true high-end headphone.
Ultrasone S-Logic® EX
S-Logic EX is the most refined version of the S-Logic system to date, Ultrasone's patented 'natural surround sound' technology. Unlike the methods used by some manufacturers, Ultrasone's S-Logic doesn't artifically alter the audio signal in anyway. By using an off-set driver, sound is directed towards the outer ear first, providing a more natural response that's much closer to how our ears respond to sound in everyday life. The result is a more detailed three-dimensional and natural sound from a closed-back headphone, an experience that’s often described as closer to listening to high-end loudspeakers.
Balanced LEMO connections
The Edition 8 EX features another first for Ultrasone – the cable is connected with 2 x four-pole LEMO connectors, providing as strong and professional connection that reflects the headphones' build quality. The cable is light, elegant and easy to connect, and can easily be modified to terminate with two balanced connectors if desired, providing an optimal method of delivering high quality sound.
Handmade in Bavaria
Each set of Edition 8 EX headphones is handmade at Ultrasone’s factory in Bavaria, with great care taken in assembling every individual component. After manufacturing, the headphones go through a painstaking testing procedure to ensure every owner enjoys complete satisfaction from their new audiophile masterpiece. At the end of this meticulous manufacturing process, the Edition 8 EX is given one final touch: each model receives an individual serial number, highlighting the company's approach to providing a unique headphone experience for every customer.
