The Core Series is Dynaudio’s flagship range of active studio monitors, designed for professional recording studios, broadcast, film and post-production, as well as any home studio users that just want the best sound quality possible from their monitors.

Building on the legacy of the legendary Air Series, the Core Series is the next evolution and spiritual heir – no pun intended – to Dynaudio’s top of the range reference monitors, providing the neutral, resolving and non-fatiguing sound that’s made Dynaudio monitors a household name in studios around the globe.

What’s in the range?

The Core Series consists of four different monitors of varying sizes and two subwoofers, all of which feature the full connectivity and Advanced DSP functionality across the range.

Starting out with the smallest is the new Core 5, a compact 2-way monitor designed for smaller studios, edit rooms and broadcast trucks, or for use as satellites in surround sound and immersive audio rigs.

Next up is the Core 7, another 2-way designed for small to medium sized rooms that require a bit more power than the 5s provide. All of the Core models are housed in heavy duty cabinets, letting you know immediately these are serious speakers designed for use in professional production – day in, day out.

Then we have the first of two 3-way models, the Core 47. This speaker is ideal for medium to larger spaces, and has proven extremely popular with producers and engineers who love the added focus that a dedicated mid-range driver can bring – particularly useful when mixing vocals and voiceovers, and for placing instruments within the stereo field. The Core 47 features a 7 inch woofer and has two specific models for left and right speaker placement, with the tweeter and mid-range driver placed on the outer side of each model.

And then we have the Core 59, the flagship model and largest of the Core Series. This three-way features a rotating tweeter and mid-range driver section – which Dynaudio calls an Orbit Baffle – allowing for either horizontal or vertical placement, and offers the extended dynamic range and low-frequency response you’d expect from a professional midfield monitor, courtesy of its large 9inch woofer.

Alongside the four speakers we also have a choice of two Core subwoofers. We’ll start with the larger of the two – the Core Sub. It’s an absolute beast, housing four of Dynaudio’s 9-inch MSP+ drivers, and 1kW of Class-D amplification via its two 500W amps.

Weighing in at 48kg, the Core Sub is designed for the largest of studio spaces and immersive systems, reproducing down to the lowest frequencies for super deep bass. With a flat response down to 15Hz and a 6dB roll-off at 13.5Hz, the Core Sub can go incredibly low, offering full range extension for any of the Dynaudio Core Series monitors.

Finally if the Core Sub is just too big, we also have the Core Sub Compact. Weighing in at 26kg, the Core Sub Compact features 2 9” MSP+ Drivers (as opposed to the Core Sub’s 4), powered by two 280 W amplifiers.

Essentially half a Core Sub, the Core Sub Compact’s equally impressive low-end makes it a fantastic option for a classy 2.1 monitoring setup when paired with a set of Core 5s or Core 7s, or for when multiple subs are required in smaller immersive audio mix rooms, providing a smooth and even bass response down to the lowest frequencies.

 

DSP and switches

Despite varying in size and power, all of the Core range features Advanced DSP options for adjusting the sound. As you’d expect from a flagship range, all of Dynaudio’s Core monitors sound great out of the box. But as this is monitoring we’re talking about, beautiful sound is not necessarily what you want here – you need to be able to hear the imperfections in your recordings!

Each speaker can therefore be adjusted to fit the room via a set of switches found on the rear panel, for optimising the position and mounting within a given space.

First up is the left and right switch, which you’ll need if you’ve chosen to connect your speakers digitally via AES.

Next we have the position switch, which allows you to choose between Anechoic, Desk or Soffit mounted. Choose anechoic if you’re using speaker stands; desk if you’re placing your speakers on a desk or meter bridge; and soffit if you’re planning to mount them in a wall. Note that Dynaudio also produce a number of mounting brackets, which are compatible with many standard K&M accessories for additional mounting options.

Next up is the bass extension switch, which applies a time-aligned high-pass filter in the low-end, and is meant to be activated when working with the Dynaudio Core Sub or Core Sub Compact subwoofers.

Then we have the sound balance filter, in response to whether your room is bright, neutral or dark, and which can help with tuning the sound in more reflective or dead-sounding rooms.

The second position switch offers three settings: free, wall and corner. Again, these give you a slightly different sound depending on the proximity of your speakers to your walls: choose free for speakers placed more than 50cm away from any walls; Wall for speakers placed less than 50cm away; and corner for speakers positioned within 50cm of a corner.

Finally, the Analogue sensitivity input and SPL level switches can be used to match the input level to the output of your audio interface, monitor controller or mixing console, as well as allowing you to adjust the maximum output level for optimising the gain staging of each monitor.

Once your monitors are correctly installed and the rear panel settings are adjusted to suit your acoustic environment, you can be confident that your mixes will seamlessly translate to other systems.

 

Drivers & Amplifiers

The Core Series drivers are crafted in Dynaudio’s state-of-the-art facility in Denmark, rigorously tested at the company’s highly impressive Jupiter testing center, alongside the company’s highly-coveted soft-dome tweeters.

Renowned for their in-house driver manufacture, the Core Series uses Dynaudio’s tried-and-tested MSP drivers, a material Dynaudio say they’ve perfected over 40 years, and found to have the best combination of damping and stiffness.

Complementing the drivers and tweeters are the Class-D amplifiers courtesy of another Danish manufacturer Pascal, who are renowned for their high-quality amplifiers found throughout the worlds of professional audio and live sound.

 

 

 

What connections do they have?

The back panels feature both analogue and digital inputs, giving you a choice of running your audio via a pure analogue path, or via the digital option for taking advantage of the powerful DSP options.  

As expected the analogue connections feature XLR inputs, along with XLR inputs and outputs for the AES digital connectivity – allowing you to daisy-chain multiple speakers if you go the digital route – whilst a word clock BNC connection provides the option to sync the speakers via a dedicated word clock signal, rather than the embedded AES3 signal.

Finally the USB connection is there for servicing and future firmware updates.
