Comments Off on Icon Qcon Pro X DAW Controller Overview Video

Icon Pro Audio proudly presents its new flagship USB-MIDI DAW controller, the Icon Qcon Pro X. Check out our overview video for a run-through of all the main functions.

See more videos at Synthax TV

When it comes to mixing in-the-box, there's nothing else like a control surface. Computers have come a long way in regards to creating music, but nothing beats the physical control and feel of real faders, buttons and knobs for recording and mixing.

If you come from the analogue domain, you'll know that producing music with a mouse and keyboard just doesn't provide the same experience. And if you've never mixed with a console before it can be a revelation, adding a whole new dimension to how you approach writing, recording, editing and producing music.

The brand new Icon Qcon Pro X Controller gives you everything you need to get hands on with your music. Featuring touch-sensitive motorised faders, dual-function rotary encoder knobs, jog-wheel and transport controls, two backlit LCD screens and LED Metering, plus a host of freely assignable buttons, the Icon Qcon Pro X brings the functions of your DAW to your fingertips.

Take Tactile Control Of Your DAW

The Qcon Pro X features 9 touch-sensitive motorized faders with 10-bit resolution and 8 rotary dual-function encoders, with the design based on replicating the functionality typically found on large format consoles. A 12 segment LED meter-bridge and a Dual 2×56 large backlit LCD Display quickly and accurately monitors 8 channels at a time, with unlimited additional banks (of 8 channels) switchable via the Bank buttons.

Interchangeable DAW specific modules allow the QCon Pro X to operate as a plug and play control surface for a variety of the most popular DAW platforms, including Pro Tools, Cubase, Nuendo, Samplitude, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Reason, Reaper, Studio One, and Bitwig. Using more than one DAW? No problem. Presets on the QCon Pro X can also be switched manually, and overlays for all supported DAWs are included in the box.

Icon Qcon Pro X - Top-down - Synthax Audio UK

The QCon Pro X also gives you tactile control of your VST, RTAS, Direct X and AU Plugins. Use the rotary encoders to dial in EQ frequencies, Q or gain, whilst viewing the parameter values on the upper LCD screen. In the same way, the Qcon Pro X can be used to control your virtual instruments as well. There’s also a “FLIP” button, which allows you to use the faders for control of plug-in parameters, instead of the encoder knobs.

Automation of track and plugin parameters is also made easy with QCon Pro X. Write fader rides just like you would on any large format analogue console using buttons for familiar functions like GROUP, WRITE, TOUCH, LATCH and TRIM. With the QCon Pro X you get the best of both worlds; the total recall, power and flexibility of your DAW with the look, feel and functionality of a sturdy piece of hardware.

    RME

The RME stand is as lively as ever at this year's show! With the RME Fireface UFX+ only released a few months ago it's still a big talking point, having recently received a 10/10 from MusicTech in their review. But the star of the show has to be the new RME Fireface UFX II, the true sequel to the much-loved Fireface UFX that has been powering studios around the world since 2010. The Fireface UFX II brings the same great sound of the UFX+ to engineers who don't require the exceptionally high channel count. You can get a full overview of this awesome new interface in our article here.

There's also the RME Digiface USB, a compact and lightweight audio interface for connecting ADAT and SPDIF equipment directly to a Mac or PC via USB. This unique little box will be great for anyone who wants a quick an simple way to add a bunch more analogue channels to their setup – you could combine it with an AD/DA Converter such as the Ferrofish A32, or add more microphone inputs with a high-quality preamp such as the RME Octamic II.

RME also had the new DTOX D-Sub to XLR breakout boxes, which provide a variety of ways to connect your DSub equipment, such as the new Ferrofish A32 Dante.

  5. NAMM 2017: Icon QCon Pro XS USB-MIDI Controller

Comments Off on NAMM 2017: Icon QCon Pro XS USB-MIDI Controller

Icon QCon Pro XS - NAMM 2017 - Synthax Audio UKThe Icon QCon Pro XS is a new expander for the Icon QCon Pro X

One of several new devices revealed at this year’s NAMM event in Anaheim, CA, the QCon Pro XS provides owners of the new Icon QCon Pro X DAW Controller with banks of additional 8 faders, so users can create a custom control surface to suit their individual needs.

    Take control of your DAW

Featuring support for all major DAWs including Cubase, Nuendo, Samplitude, Logic Pro, Studio One, Bitwig, Reason, Ableton Live and Pro Tools, the QCon Pro X also has MIDI-map functionality for working with other DAWs, or for customising the layout to perfectly suit your workflow. Housed in a robust metal casing and using USB 2.0 to connect to the master QCon Pro X, each QCon Pro XS also features a Kensington lock port for added security.

Touch-sensitive, motorised faders for easy recall

Probably the most exciting feature of both the Qcon Pro X and the QCon Pro XS is the touch-sensitive, motorised faders. Each of the 8 faders feature 10-Bit resolution, with a 12-segment LED metering bridge for individual channel-monitoring from the unit itself. Each channel also features an assignable rotary knob for control of functions such as pan or effects sends, along with four assignable buttons, which default to Record Arm, Solo, Mute and Channel Select.

Icon QCon Pro XS - Synthax Audio UK

Icon QCon Pro XS fader expander for the Icon QCon Pro X

Control your plugins too – VST, RTAS, Direct X & AU

Another intriguing feature of the QCon Pro X is the ability to control your plugins. Pushing the Edit button allows you to change the parameters of your plugins on the fly, and this functionality extends to the QCon Pro XS when its hooked up to the QCon Pro X. This opens up a world of hands-on control options that you just don’t have when solely using a mouse and keyboard when you create music.

For example, you can use the knobs and faders to control your EQ, which makes finding that perfect frequency to cut far easier and more natural. Or you could increase the feedback of your echo/delay effect, or automate your fader rides just like you would on a large-format console. With the QCon Pro X and Pro XS expanders you get the best of both worlds; the total recall, power and flexibility of your DAW with the look, feel and functionality of a sturdy piece of hardware.

Connect 3 units together for a total of 32 channels

Up to 3 Icon QCon XS’s can be connected in series, providing a total channel-count of 32 channels (including the Icon QCon Pro X). Most recording and mix engineers will find this gives them more than enough faders for the majority of projects, and as the QCon Pro X also features a ‘switch button’ (for quickly switching between groups of faders), you’ll still enjoy quick access to control over every audio channel in your project.

  6. NAMM 2017: Icon Platform X & Platform D2

Comments Off on NAMM 2017: Icon Platform X & Platform D2

    Icon Platform X & D2 - NAMM 2017 - Synthax Audio UKAt the Icon Pro Audio stand – Icon Platform X & Platform D2

Another first for NAMM 2017, music production manufacturer Icon Pro Audio have just announced the Icon Platform X, an 8-channel expansion unit to go with the company’s recently released Platform M mobile DAW Controller, and the Platform D2 back-lit LCD screen.

    Get hands-on with your music

The Platform X is an extremely compact, durable and versatile control surface. Support for all of the major DAWs is included straight out of the box, including Cubase, Nuendo, Samplitude, Logic Pro, Studio One, Bitwig, Reason, Ableton and Pro Tools. Whether you're recording on the move or in the studio, the Platform X allows you to take control of even more channels and really get hands-on with your mix.

Use standalone or connect to the Icon Platform M

Designed to work either alongside the Platform M or in standalone, the Platform X allows users to expand their setup with hands-on fader control up to 32 channels, allowing for hardware-style, hands-on control when recording and mixing with software.

The Platform X can also be operated as a standalone USB-MIDI controller, although it will function much more effectively when used in conjunction with the Platform M, as the Platform X lacks transport controls, or the ability to switch banks of faders from the unit itself.

    Icon Platform X & D2 - Icon Pro Audio

Icon Platform X with D2 display attached

    Expand your setup

Each channel features a touch-sensitive, motorised fader with 10-Bit resolution; a dual function rotary encoder knob (rotate and enter/select); plus 4 illuminated buttons for Select, Mute, Solo and Record. The encoder, fader and buttons can all also be freely assigned via Icon’s included iMap software, which allows you to customise the control surface to suit your project or workflow.

Icon Platform D2 – Display Attachment for the Icon Platform X

Also on show at the Icon stand is the new Platform D2, the second generation screen for both the Platform M and Platform X. A 2×65 backlit LCD screen, the Platform D2 provides information such as channel names and controller values for each channel. This is great if you liking mixing on the move, or just like to be able to work away from your screen. As a dedicated display unit, the Platform D2 gives you a simple way to keep track of each channel’s info whilst you’re recording or mixing.

Synthax - MPX Show - 2014 - Emirates StadiumOur thanks to everyone who stopped by to see us at the Music Production Expo last week. The Expo was held for the third year at The Emirates Stadium in London on the 14th and 15th of November and also hosted a number of industry related seminars.

As well as launching “Perfect Partners”, our winter promotion that gives you a FREE Icon iControls Pro when you buy an RME Fireface UFX, we also ran a competition to give away 2 Icon Qcon Lites. These superb controllers with 100mm touch-sensitive motorised channel/master fader, jog wheel and numerous button and knob controllers are winging their way to the winners, Andy Lowe and Mike Harrison.

The new RME Fireface 802 was of course of great interest as was the new (well, to us anyway) myMix monitoring and record system.

Making their debut in the UK was the Ultrasone Performance series of headphones and the Sonodyne SRP series of studio monitors.
